چکیده

We present the annual trigonometric parallax of PSR J1744−1134 derived from an analysis of pulse times of arrival. The measured parallax, π = 2.8±0.3 mas ranks among the most precisely determined distances to any pulsar. The parallax distance of 357 −35 pc is over twice that derived from the dispersion measure using the Taylor & Cordes model for the Galactic electron distribution. The mean electron density in the path to the pulsar, ne = (8.8±0.9)×10 −3 cm, is the lowest for any disk pulsar. We have compared the ne for PSR J1744−1134 with those for another 11 nearby pulsars with independent distance estimates. We conclude that there is a striking asymmetry in the distribution of electrons in the local interstellar medium. The electron column densities for pulsars in the third Galactic quadrant are found to be systematically higher than for those in the first. The former correlate with the position of the well known local HI cavity in quadrant three. The excess electrons within the cavity may be in the form of HII clouds marking a region of interaction between the local hot bubble and a nearby superbubble. We use observations from the CASTLES survey of gravita-tional lenses to study extinction in 23 lens galaxies with 0 < z l < 1. The median differential extinction between lensed images is ∆E(B −V) = 0.05 mag, and the directly measured extinctions agree with the amount needed to explain the differences between the statistics of radio and (optical) quasar lens surveys. We also measure the first ex...

We examine the claim by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) that the local halo density of white dwarfs is an order of magnitude higher than previously thought. As it stands, the observational data support the presence of a kinematically distinct population of halo white dwarfs at the >99% confidence level. A maximum-likelihood analysis gives a radial velocity dispersion a of σ h U =150 +80 −40 km s −1 a...

This chapter discusses Galactic dust and how its thermal emission confuses CMBR measurements. Interstellar dust grains are composed of many differing species, and observational evidence has only begun to disentagle their composition and sizes. Fortunately, their far-IR/millimeter emission is less complex. We describe how a very simple two-species model can describe the emission at 200 < ν < 300...
